Christian Ethos

Thurlow is a Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School and we have strong links with St Peter’s Church, Thurlow.  Revd Chris Giles is our vicar and also one of our two Foundation Governors. Father Chris regularly visits our school to deliver collective worship.

The diocese provides two Foundation Governors who are actively involved in monitoring the Christian Ethos of the school. As a Church School, we take pride in our motto

‘Laying the Foundations for a Bright Future’

which is exemplified by our school bible story The Parable of The Wise and The Foolish Man (Matthew, Chapter 7, verses 24 to 27 and the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 6, verses 46 to 49.)

We encourage the spiritual, social, moral and cultural development of the Federation and the Thurlow school family by embedding Christian values into everyday life.

We have raised money for Children in Need, The Little Princess Trust, Macmillan Cancer, Comic Relief, Sports Relief, and any other charities that the children are interested in.

As a Church School we are keen to support the mental health of our pupils and staff. In addition to high quality pastoral support within classrooms, our children have access to trained ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) staff who support them with their worries. Our staff form close relationships with families and are able to support them through challenging situations.

Our staff have access to wellbeing support as well as free professional advice. The Governors closely monitor the character of Thurlow School supporting our promotion of our Christian Ethos, evaluating collective worship and other related activities as well as formally monitoring the wellbeing of pupils and staff, the latter, annually.
