Maths

At Hundon and Thurlow Primary Federation we deploy a ‘mastery’ methodology to our teaching of Maths, blending the best practice from a range of programmes and approaches, underpinned by White Rose Maths.

White Rose Maths has deep understanding, mathematical thinking, mathematical language and problem-solving central to its teaching and supports our development of a culture of confidence and competence in Maths which produces strong, secure learning and real progress.

With this approach we’re shaping assured, happy and resilient mathematicians who relish the challenge of Maths. As a result, our children become independent, reflective thinkers, whose skills not only liberate them in Maths but also support them across the curriculum.

In class, Maths lessons are taught daily for an hour. Sessions have pace with all children getting to be ‘hands on’ with their Maths learning using concrete manipulatives and pictorial representations to support and embed understanding of mathematical concepts.

Classes also deploy ‘Maths Meetings’ several times a week., particularly in Early Years and Key Stage One to teach and revise general knowledge Maths as well as consolidate key areas. Singing and chanting are integral to our ‘Maths Meetings’ so our children are practicing concepts and skills on a regular basis, continually building on their mastery

Our staff are dedicated to teaching mathematics to a high standard and all our teachers and Learning Support Assistants have received training ‘in house’ as well as undertaking training with external providers including Maths Mastery and White Rose. Further to this we have staff who have undertaken extra subject-specific training.

We are committed to working together to give the very best, and to make a difference to every pupil.
